Actually the servers have to be the same (the same server names matching the same underlying NNTP servers). If not, the article numbers won't match. But what I have, and I'm guessing Ted has, is the same servers (in my case news.gmane.org, news.eclipse.org and news.opera.com) with a different subset of groups on different Gnusen. In particular, a different subset of gmane groups. And for those gmane groups that overlap, I prefer to only read the new stuff once.
