One of the advantages of git is that you can retroactively add history
to a tree using a feature called graft points[1].  So I don't think the
initial lack of a complete import should stall all efforts.  The Linux
development with git started devoiod of history as well, as there were
no means back then to export it from the proprietary SCM they used
before.
