So I discovered the solution is to use `C-u R' instead of `S W'.  

Actually, there is both:

  `gnus-summary-reply-with-original'
  `gnus-article-reply-with-original'

and both take care of the active region.

But there is only 

  `gnus-summary-wide-reply-with-original' 

and *no*: 

  `gnus-article-wide-reply-with-original'

Maybe this is a bit confusing?  Or is there any strong argument behind
this restriction?
