I use "%&user-date;" in my gnus-summary-line-format which gives the time
of posting using a format that adapts to how long ago the email was
sent. See the description of gnus-user-date-format-alist.
Otherwise, have you tried %o?

Thanks, I think that I've sorted it by using
,----
| gnus-summary-line-format "%0{%U%R%z%}%3{│%} %1{%&user-date;%} %3{│%} %4{%-20,20f%} %3{│%} %1{%B%}%s\n"
| (setq gnus-user-date-format-alist '((t . "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M")))
`----
in my '.gnus.el'. So far its working :)
Sharon.

I've achieved my aim by using "%&user-date;" as you suggested and with this in
my '.gnus.el'
,----
| (setq gnus-user-date-format-alist '((t . "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M")))
`----
which looks like this
