Silly suggestion: that would mean loading the old file in gnus, and maybe corrupting it. I've sent the info for before and after for one group to you in email. What I did was search for the group name in .newsrc.eld, then go to the starting paranthesis, and C-SPC followed by C-M-f and M-w.
