If emacs crashes (as the above message suggests), there's almost
certainly something wrong with emacs -- lisp code should not be able to
cause crashes.

One thing to check for though, is whether you byte-compiled gnus for
some other emacs, as the various versions of emacs use incompatible
byte-code formats.
