Is this a gnus problem or an XEmacs problem? It happens when I open
groups. Interestingly it does not happen if I open with a prefix. This
is No Gnus 0.3 from cvs. There is no core dump.

Fatal error: assertion failed, file /usr/local/src/xemacs-21.5/src/bytecode.c, line 1605, abort()

Lisp backtrace follows:

If emacs crashes (as the above message suggests), there's almost
certainly something wrong with emacs -- lisp code should not be able to
cause crashes.

One thing to check for though, is whether you byte-compiled gnus for
some other emacs, as the various versions of emacs use incompatible
byte-code formats.
