When I set gnus-fetch-old-headers to 'invisible, and leave an nnspool
group having read all articles, the number of unread articles in group
buffer seems to show the number of fetched old thread-forming
articles. It can be reset to 0 only by [C] in group buffer.

I'm able to reproduce this behaviour in only one nnml group now. When I
try to enter the group the unread number in group buffer goes down to 0
and cursor moves to the next group. Strange ...

Do you `set expunge below' (V x)?
Check the parameters of the group (G E).
