My guess is that gnus isn't doing anything different at startup than
when you press g, but that the difference is the state gnus is in.
At startup, all servers are closed, but when you press g, some are
already open but the connection might be semi-dead.
So, if you find you are still having trouble, you could try going
into the server buffer and closing all servers before hitting g.
If that helps, then you could see which server(s) you need to
close to eliminate the problem.
