By trial and error, (commenting out stuff in ~/.gnus.el) I finally figured what caused the weirdness. When I removed (nnimap "cyrus.andrew.cmu.edu" (nnimap-authenticator anonymous) (nnimap-list-pattern "archive.*") (nnimap-stream network)) from gnus-secondary-select-methods, and started Gnus, everything worked (except for the cyrus folders). Then I also found an email from someone else who had the exact same problem, for the exact same reason (he didn't want to post to the ding newsgroup, because he didn't want spam to his address, so he emailed Simon and me). Seems like there is something in the cyrus response that thoroughly trashes nnimap support for all nnimap servers. Strange! I wonder if this happens for the newest checkout from CVS as well?
