I think you are right.
I also found nnrss kind of slow, so I switched to rss2email.
So there imo are at least two fine alternatives out there (now).
What about a page on the emacswiki?
Something like "Reading RSS in gnus" that could be mentioned in the
manual.
However, due to its volatile wiki-ish nature, maybe adding a link to a
page on the emacswiki to the manual is not a good idea...
