At that point Gnus/emacs refused to load it. I deleted the file, and did a fresh `g', followed by `J s', and everything was fine, with a 2kB .overview, rather than a 22MB one. Is there a recommended way to do this kind of housecleaning? Manually deleting files in the hierarchies maintained by Gnus feels like a hack.
