The solution for me was to put explicitely into my ~/.Gnus.el

(setq gnus-xmas-glyph-directory
"/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/etc/gnus/")

Without this, it was set to /usr/local/pgnus-0.95/etc/gnus.
