I'm responsible for the code but haven't had time to work on gnus for
several years. Updating of marks is supposed to work---indeed, it works
fine for me with imap. I haven't used notmuch but the marks code
shouldn't depend on that.
One reason I can't say something more useful is I am using a version of
nnir that has updates that I never got around to pushing. Its possible
that I fixed some bugs in the marks code and never pushed it. If I can
find some time to poke around I will.
