You don't have to provide the new name for the variable and the old name is keyed by symbol: (make-obsolete-variable 'nnimap-split-rule "see `nnimap-split-methods'" "Gnus x.y.z") It still shows up with `C-h v' but at least Emacs knows it's obsolete and will indicate it when customizing and when byte-compiling. I *think* that's the right way to do it. It seems to intern that symbol, though, which could be a problem. Ted
