I assume I'm loading gnus-pointer.xpm (as opposed to *.xbm). My mode-line background defaults to grey75, but I set to other values and the transparent background behaved properly. Opening gnus-pointer.xpm in Geeqie correctly displayed it as having a transparent background. I know that's not helpful, but... Eric
