I just adjusted the display of faces like this:
; Align the top of the face with the top of the text, approximately:
(setq gnus-face-properties-alist
'((pbm . (:face gnus-x-face :ascent 25))
(png . (:ascent 25))))
Does something similar exist for picons? My guess at
gnus-picon-face-properties-alist was too optimistic :-)
