Makes sense. But:

gnus-save-newsrc-file is a variable defined in ‘gnus-start.el’.
Its value is t

$ ls -l ~/.newsrc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 albinus albinus 0 Mar 12  2012 /home/albinus/.newsrc

So the file isn't saved for 6 years ...
