Start from clean slate.  Compose email, save it (^x^s) and send.
Inspect file ~/Mail/archive:

There shouldn't even be anything there because supposedly drafts are
simply deleted after sending.

Of course, the result is the same if removing the setting

  (setq gnus-parameters '(("nndraft:drafts" (expiry-target . delete))))

from the .gnus file.  This only shows that messages from the drafts
group should never be expired when sent, but just deleted, under all
circumstances.
