Nobody will score down your mails for asking questions.  Ending each
sentence with a smiley might just do it, though.

sort-subr is an "autoloaded" function, which means that it is loaded
on-demand.  Maybe your XEmacs is somehow misconfigured, so that it
doesn't process autoloads correctly.

Try evaluating (load "sort") before starting Gnus.  See whether that
helps.
