I have (from M-x describe-face mode-line):
Foreground: black
Background: grey86
I'm using GNU Emacs 27.0.50 (build 4, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version
3.22.28) of 2018-02-25 built this evening (and don't remember not seing
this "problem").
