I quite like the "news-like" behaviour - the emails I have read and have processed (no more to do) do not appear by default. I think in recent times the catch phrase "Inbox Zero" has been put forth for basically the same thing. I've never cared for showing read messages per default, but I seem to remember someone showing how to do that recently?
