For me, it saves me the work of creating a folder, subscribing, and creating a filter for a mailing list. And it saves me the work of tearing everything down when I decide to no longer subscribe to the list. Of course, for some lists, (eg. the DocBook lists ;-) ) I have to subscribe to the list, and /dev/null the messages from the list, to be allowed to post from gmane. mailman lists allows me to subscribe, but not receive any messages.
