There's a "debugmode" in the leafnode config that puts trace stuff to
the syslog, it might show what's going on.  It might go to
/var/log/syslog, or maybe somewhere else, or maybe you'll need to set
some syslog options.  There's nntp-record-commands inside gnus too
which shows just the commands going out.
