Hello

Is there a way of generating a virtual group which is based on the
subject of messages from other groups, but not on the whole other
groups.

Thanks

Is this for mail, news or both?

For mail, isn't this in effect what searching with nnmairix or notmuch
does?

For news I'm not sure!

Well the best place to look for guidance is the Emacs wiki

http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GnusMairix

notice the Features section

    - Query mairix with a search term and display results in a group.
    - Easy generation of search queries using the minibuffer or graphical widgets.
    - Generate search queries based on the currently displayed mail.
    - Create permanent nnmairix groups bound to certain mairix searches (“smart” groups).
    - Jump to article in the original group.
    - Update the mairix database.

Once you have it all set up then a quick G-b s in the Group buffer will
create the group.

More detail in the Gnus manual under Search
