Somebody will correct me but I think /foreign/ groups refer to those
where the actual content is stored remotely (nntp, nnimap) versus
locally (nnml, nnmaildir).  I think this distinction mattered more when
connecting to the network, especially with dial-up, was a big deal?

We sometimes forget that gnus has been around for quite a long
time... although maybe not as long as some of us have been using email,
mind you (e.g. any of you remember using uucp style addresses
host1!host2!...!user? ;-)!
