This means, for instance, that all 50+ New York Times rss feeds are downloaded and parsed, even if I have subscribed only to one group in the backend. Although nnshimbun is of course a third party package, a thread on this list earlier this month suggested that this was an issue affecting other backends: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/70707 In fact, this issue was fixed on September 10 with the following commit: --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- commit b6f511b7ddbde52b82ad34a450251ce008212cce Author: Katsumi Yamaoka Date: Fri Sep 10 05:30:35 2010 +0000 gnus-start.el (gnus-read-active-for-groups): Check only subscribed groups. --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- AFAICT, the regression was introduced with the following commit: --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- commit daae30b5b3e1592f628dd74543820de9282cac3a Author: Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen Date: Wed Sep 22 21:44:52 2010 +0200 Only run -request-scan once per method on `g'. This ensures that backends like nnfolder don't open all their folders. --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- (If this requires a fix on the nnshimbun/emacs-w3m side of things, please do let me know, and I would be happy to send an email to that list.) Thanks, Matt
