I'm using Gnus v5.10.3 (from Debian/unstable) to read mail on an Exchange
5.5 server via IMAP. It works well in general, but I'm having problems
splitting my incoming mail.

I'm using a simple group mail splitting setup ('to-address' group parameters
defined where appropriate), and if I visit my inbox ('nnimap+lan:INBOX' and
hit 'B q' on a mail that I think should be split into another group, I get
the expected result (example: 'This message would go to zope.user').
However, if I try to respool the message with 'B r', I get errors like:

Copying to nnimap: (1503)...
Protocol Error: "Invalid ASTRING for folder name found in APPEND command"
Couldn't Copy article 1503: Protocol Error: "Invalid ASTRING for folder name found in APPEND command"
nnimap: Updating info for nnimap+lan:INBOX...done

My "test" group was originally named "Mailing lists/Zope", but I thought
that the "/" might be causing the problem, so I created the new "zope.user"
group and moved all of the "Mailing lists/Zope" messages into it.

Any thoughts of where I might look to troubleshoot or fix this? I'm going
crazy with having all of my mail come into my inbox - how can people without
mail filters stand this?

Hm. It could be the space that's causing trouble, actually. Does the
new group have a space in it?

Are you sure the new group is named zope.user and not INBOX.zope.user?
What does RET on the server in the server buffer say about it? Maybe
you don't have permissions on the group? G l tells you about it.

No. I created it from Gnus, and it's whole "specification" is
"nnimap+lan:zope.user".

> Are you sure the new group is named zope.user and not INBOX.zope.user?

Yes.

> What does RET on the server in the server buffer say about it?

It lists all of the expected groups on the server, including "zope.user".

> Maybe you don't have permissions on the group? G l tells you about it.

Response:

gnus-group-nnimap-edit-acl: Server does not support ACL's

I have a lot of strangely-named groups because this mailbox was first
accessed with Outlook, then KMail, then Evolution, then Thunderbird, then
Gnus (I *always* come back - I don't know why I even bother to look around
:) ). However, the two groups in question are "INBOX" and "zope.user"; no
spaces, slashes, or any other strange characters. I tried renaming the
recipient folder to just "zope" with no perceived difference in behavior.
Furthermore, although I can't use 'B r' to respool, I *can* use 'B m' to
move mail into the folder:

    Moving to nnimap+lan:zope: (1508)...
    Expiring articles in nnimap+lan:INBOX
    gnus-agent-expire: Loading overview... Done
    gnus-agent-expire: Sorting entries... Done
    gnus-agent-expire: Merging entries... Done
gnus-agent-expire: nnimap+lan:INBOX:1508: Removed read article number from article alist, NOV entry removed
Expiry recovered 1 NOV entries, deleted 0 files, and freed 371.000000 B.
    nnimap: Setting marks in zope...done
    nnimap: Updating info for nnimap+lan:zope...done
    Auto-saving...done

Interesting. Just for the heck of it, could you try a group that's
named INBOX.foo? So INBOX.zope.list instead of zope.list, for
instance.

Cyrus gives special handling to group names starting with "INBOX.".

You might get a better idea on what goes on if you set imap-log,
imap-debug and nnimap-debug to t and restart gnus.

Beware before you send the contents of the log buffers as they might
contain your passwords.

Sure. And for safety I dropped the ".user" and just made it "INBOX.zope" -
same results. I also killed all other groups that had "/", " ", or "." just
in case Gnus was scanning the group listing and choking on one of the names.

> Cyrus gives special handling to group names starting with "INBOX.".

Yep. Exchange seems to be an interesting animal as well.

Attached is the (slightly edited) result of that experiment. The error I
described appears at entry number 51.

It is unlikely that Zope 2.7 change anything with respect to your
problem...

`B r' doesn't work on nnimap. The reason is that it
nnimap-request-accept-article with GROUP set to nil, and it is not
described what this means in the reference manual. (Well, that's my
excuse for not fixing this, anyway.)

You can simulate `B r' by moving the message, marked as unread, into
your `nnimap-split-inbox'. Then it will be splitted again when you
press 'g'.

Or do something silly like this:

(defun dsg-nnimap-resplit (inbox)
  (interactive
   (list (completing-read
	  "split-INBOX: " gnus-active-hashtb nil
	  (gnus-read-active-file-p)
	  "nnimap+"
	  'gnus-group-history)))
  (let ((nnimap-split-inbox (gnus-group-real-name inbox)))
    (gnus-group-get-new-news)))

Now that I do all my splitting via sieve, I don't even maintain split
rules anymore so I haven't used it in a very long time. I don't think
I ever used it much even when I did use gnus' splitting but I was
bored one day and it seemed like a good idea at the time :-)
