I use nnbabyl under OS/2, which has the advantage that you can read
the same rmail file using either gnus or rmail. Here's the relevant
portion of my .emacs file:

(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods '((nnbabyl ""))
      nnmail-spool-file "d:/tcpip/spool/mail/stanton"
      nnbabyl-mbox-file "d:/mail/rmail"
      nnbabyl-get-new-mail t
      nnmail-crosspost t
      nnmail-split-methods
        '(("mail.out" "^From:.*stanton")
	  ("mail.ding" "^To:.*ding\\|^CC:.*ding\\|^From:.*larsi\\|^From:*.gnus-bug")
	  ("mail.emtex" "^To:.*emtex\\|^CC:.*emtex\\|^To:.*ctan\\|^CC:.*ctan\||To:.*dvips")
	  ("mail.emx" "^To:.*emx\\|^CC:.*emx\\|^From:.*mattes")
	  ("mail.gnuplot" "^To:.*gnuplot\\|^CC:.*gnuplot")
	  ("mail.gauss" "^From:.*gauss")
	  ("mail.FEN" "^To:.*FEN\@GSB\\|^To:.*ARN@WIN95")
	  ("mail.bbdb" "^To:.*info-bbdb\\|^CC:.*info-bbdb")
	  ("mail.auctex" "^To:.*auctex\\|^CC:.*auctex")
	  ("mail.www" "^From:.*goservlist")

	  ("mail.mailcrypt" "^To:.*mc\\|^CC:.*mc")

Yup. I'll do just that. (And I'm stealing your bit about pentagrams
and goats. Go ahead -- just sue me for copyright infringement! Or
the FSF! So there!)

Ah. Well, there is no such thing as a "long-file-name" setting for
nnml (or any of the other mail backends). nnml really, really wants
something that looks like a normal news spool, where "." in file names
is verboten.

Of course, this is a stupid restriction, so I'll be adding a
`nnmail-use-long-file-names' variable to September.
