I use nnbabyl under OS/2, which has the advantage that you can read
the same rmail file using either gnus or rmail. Here's the relevant
portion of my .emacs file:
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods '((nnbabyl ""))
nnmail-spool-file "d:/tcpip/spool/mail/stanton"
nnbabyl-mbox-file "d:/mail/rmail"
nnbabyl-get-new-mail t
nnmail-crosspost t
nnmail-split-methods

Yup. I'll do just that. (And I'm stealing your bit about pentagrams
and goats. Go ahead -- just sue me for copyright infringement! Or
the FSF! So there!)

Ah. Well, there is no such thing as a "long-file-name" setting for
nnml (or any of the other mail backends). nnml really, really wants
something that looks like a normal news spool, where "." in file names
is verboten.
Of course, this is a stupid restriction, so I'll be adding a
`nnmail-use-long-file-names' variable to September.
