Yes, but there are still no groups for that topic yet I can not
delete it.

I imagine that the error is during smilification, and not during the
setq :-).  Something must be wrong with smiley-nosey-regexp-alist, but
since I didn't write it (and I don't use it), I wouldn't know.

I changed the default in smiley.el and then it works fine.  Why
would it fail after using the setq?

I'm not sure if it is the right error in this case, but the problem
might be that smiley.el is usually not loaded when .gnus is evaluated.

I have in my .gnus

;; Fancy emoticons
(require 'smiley)  ;;;; <--------------------- 
(setq smiley-regexp-alist smiley-nosey-regexp-alist)
(add-hook 'gnus-article-prepare-hook 'gnus-smiley-display)
