Is there a way to see 'personal information cards' as standard
signatures? Or better still is there a way to remove them from the
article buffer's display?

Thanks,

Shaun

I have fetched and installed vcard.el and pgnus seems to make use of
it automatically. The only way I can tell vcards from other
signatures is because they are italic and because they are formatted
so nicely! :-)

Well, I have gone and got vcard.el. All I need to do now is wait for
some unsuspecting vcard user to stumble across my article buffer, for
the magic to work/not work (as I don't use vcards myself).

Shaun

Yup.

Perhaps I should include vcard.el in the new contrib directory? It's
not Gnus-specific, but it's really useful and shouls get wider
distribution, I think...

Since it's GPL software, of course I have no objection. :-)

But despite appearances the code is in fact being actively maintained; I'm
in the middle of a substantial rewrite to be more standards compliant.
Right now it handles Netscape-generated vcards fine, but can't parse some
others generated by different MUAs. I expect to have this fixed very soon.

So instead of copying the file, you might want to provide a link to the
canonical source so that users will find the latest version automatically:

  http://www.splode.com/~friedman/software/emacs-lisp/src/vcard.el

There is a description of the file and other related modules around:

  http://www.splode.com/~friedman/software/emacs-lisp/index.html#vcard

Linking either one or both of them seems reasonable; I do not expect those
urls to change.

I downloaded vcard.el and did a (require 'vcard), but the only message I
have archived with a vcard attachment still shows it as an attachment.
Is there something else I need to do?

I have:

   GNU Emacs 20.3.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) of Wed Dec 16 1998 on shell.faradic.net
   Pterodactyl Gnus v0.96

Thanks.

A lot of mailers send them out as application/octet-stream instead of
whatever the appropriate mime-type is.

Actually, it's text/x-vcard, but the disposition was attachment. If I
change it to inline, I see the vcard, but it appears just as it does if
I do C-u g. I did debug-on-entry for vcard-parse-string, and it was
never called.

Is there something I have to do in my configuration to make the vcard
routines get called when the message is displayed?

Just to nitpick: other signatures should also be italic, at least they
are for me. So it leaves us the formatting. :-)

To answer my own question, the problem was that I didn't really do a
(require 'vcard), I had done M-x load-file RET ~/vcard.el, and ~ wasn't
in my load-path. The test for inlining vcards in mm-decode.el does a
(locate-library "vcard") which means that vcard.el must be in the
load-path.

Aside from that, the particular vcard that I was trying to view was
apparently not created by Netscape, so it couldn't be parsed correctly
(see <19991115140344.79360.FMU18450@piglet.splode.com>). But when I
created a vcard and mailed it to myself, it worked. Very nice. Thanks
to Noah Friedman for this library.

Bad juju. It should be:

(or (fboundp 'vcard-whatever)
    (locate-library "vcard"))

Perhaps it should be

(or (featurep 'vcard)
    (locate-library "vcard"))

Yup. Perhaps I should set up a web page of links to packages that's
nice to have installed if you're running Gnus?

Suggestions for URLs to be included would be welcome.

Anyway, is vcard.el going to be included in the Emacsen distributions?

Yet another suggestion: try calling a vcard function, catching all
errors. After this, (featurep 'vcard).

Yup. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.99.

If the vcard function is autoloaded, then (locate-library "vcard") has
to return non-nil for the autoloading to work, doesn't it? So I think
those are equivalent.
