I've been using the following for a about a year to handle Gmail group names and
haven't had an issue before:
(setq gnus-ignored-newsgroups "^to\\.\\|^[0-9. ]+\\( \\|$\\)\\|^[\"]\"[#'()]")

I tried that but it didn't help I'm afraid :(
