It is possible to do it in O(1) from Gnus's point of view: Push that
functionality down into the backend. :-)
Caching threading information is another way.
(Another thing that takes time, besides the ones you mention, are
inserting the entry for each message in the summary buffer, with the
proper MIME decoding and stuff.)
