That is the only way it works. FWIW, imap.el uses unibyte buffers, so it can be made to work. OTOH, I'm somewhat inclined to change this, to reduce the amount of code that has anything to do with Mule. OTTH, don't fix what aint broken. (Nnimap uses string-as-multibyte on the data handed from imap.el to get it in a format acceptable by Gnus.)
