it's suddenly become more serious...

i sent a test message to myself, the inbox group seems to receive it, but
the number of unread articles goes up to six. when i try to read the
group, the under of unread articles jumps back to zero. the strangest
thing is that the mail is getting stored in ~/Mail/mail/misc in what
appears to be an nnml type backend !?!  i'm still getting mail delivered
properly to my other groups though.
