Subject: enabling things for new users

One way to introduce advanced features in Gnus to newbies would be to
have them enabled (possibly with some restrictive defaults) -- for
example, I think it would be a good idea to enable the topics mode per
default. It doesn't harm much (and it IS be possible to disable), but
makes the group buffer look better.
Also, the default group lines could perhaps also be improved by
including more information -- such as total number of articles in a
group.
