I suspect the elc files have been mis-compiled. Have you done it
by yourself (i.e. having built Emacs 23.0.90.4 from the source)?
Otherwise, could you try re-compiling the Gnus elc files? To do
that, well, I don't know the proper way, but:
$ cp -pr /usr/share/emacs/23.0.90/lisp/gnus /tmp
$ cd /tmp/gnus
$ gunzip *.gz
$ touch *.el
$ emacs -batch -q -f batch-byte-recompile-directory
$ cp *.elc /usr/share/emacs/23.0.90/lisp/gnus
$ cd /tmp
$ rm -fr gnus
