I think the best is to post a gzip'd example message if possible. BTW, I have the mule-gbk package[1] installed (for checking whether emacs-w3m decodes gbk web pages correctly). It provides the gbk coding system, moreover modifies `mm-charset-synonym-alist'! Though I don't know which of mule-gbk, Emacs' cp936 and Unicode-2's gbk is better, since I'm ignorant in Chinese.
