`?\s' causes an error when compiling Gnus using Emacs 21 as
follows:
While compiling toplevel forms in file gnus/lisp/deuglify.el:
!! error (("Invalid escape character syntax"))
Moreover, XEmacs regards `?\s' as `?s', so the summary buffer is
filled up with `s' characters. Please fix it.
