Hi

I'm receiving a newsletter, and by chance I stumbled upon the fact that
it includes several attachments.

I say "by chance" because Gnus never indicated this to me.

The most recent mail can be found at
http://www.thomas-huehn.de/usenet/aga.txt

It contains several jpg images, but they are neither displayed inline
nor is there one of those "attachment buttons" on which you can click to
see/save the attachment.

In the message buffer there is just no trace of an attachment to be
found.

Is the mail corrupted (munpack decodes it, though), have I
misconfigured my Gnus or is this a bug?

Thomas

Noone out there who can assess whether this can possibly be a bug or
must be a misconfiguration or a mail with MIME errors?

Actually I can see the attachments when I open this file as a foreign
group (each attachment is shown as a seperate message in the summary
buffer) from a local file, but on the nnimap backend there's no way to
get the attachments.

I tested http://www.thomas-huehn.de/usenet/aga.txt and viewed
those images. They are not ordinary MIME parts but are the
attachments of the text/html part of the message. Maybe only
emacs-w3m[1] is the means to display them with no extra
manipulations.

Thank you, I'll try that.

And maybe the newsletter sender can be convinced to change the type of
attachment.

I'm seeing a similar problem with nnimap. As an example, any mail
encapsulated by spamassassin with report_safe set to 1 (use a
message/rfc822 attachment) cannot be parsed by nnimap and is therefore
ignored by gnus. If report_safe is set to 2 (use a text/plain
attachment) then I can see the mail in gnus.

When such mail is fetched the one of the (assert)s in (imap-parse-body)
from imap.el gets triggered.

I'm still trying to debug why that happens....

I'm not sure I fully understand the structure in the sample message or
perhaps the OP's actual problem, but for what it's worth I have
gnus-mime-display-multipart-as-mixed set to t and find that images
included with text/html alternatives show up as viewable attachments.

That's indeed another means but it doesn't display contents as
the author intended to. Images have been embedded in the html
part of the message in question like the following:

text
<img src="cid:...">
text
<img src="cid:...">
text

All those images have been attached in the message, having been
indexed with Content-IDs. In a web site, such contents will
normally be made like the following:

text
<img src="http:...">
text
<img src="http:...">
text

Regards,
