I have my mail-utils.el gzipped so that the .el version of that doesn't exist either. There are probably other people who have thrown out the .el files altogether. Why is it necessary anyway? Local .el/.elc dependencies should be handled on the Makefile level (or at least in a simular manner). At least XEmacs finds the .el files before .elc deeper in the load-path. Jan Please please P.S.
