Unfortunately, after gnus-no-server, the server list is empty - no servers other than nnarchive (IIRC). So ^ M-o doesn't do what's needed, as there are no servers to open... But thanks for the suggestion. Actually, after some experimentation, the extra time to open the servers isn't a major issue, so I don't *really* need a solution any more - it's now more of a nagging feeling of "surely there's a way of doing this" rather than a burning need...
