What size groups do you guys read? I'm on what I consider a "very large" mailing list (50-200 messages/day), and expiry rarely takes more than a few seconds. Are you trying to save those few seconds, or are you on something with a LOT of traffic (or, perhaps, what back end are you using? I'm using nnml.)
