Software version : 5.11 in Emacs 22/23.

,----[ (info "(message)Security") ]
| To be able to send encrypted mail, a personal certificate is not
| required. Message (MML) need a certificate for the person to whom you

| `C-c C-m c s'.
`----

'Is required' or 'is not required'? From the context, the former seems
correct.

In my view: is not required. For sending encrypted mail you
really need just the public key of the receiver. However, the
receiver will not be able to verify, whether the sender is the
person he claims to be. For this, the sender needs to encrypt
the message with his private key, the receiver then is able to
verify the origin of the message using the sender's public key
(which the receiver must trust).

I hope this made it somehow clear,
Franz

Understood. Thanks.

Should s/encrypt/sign/, right?

You're right, my wording was to general: the message digest is
encrypted. And this process signs the message.

No problem ;-)
