The default is indeed broken in mh, but a user that wants to can force
correct behavior. Perhaps using %(trim) in the replcomps file? I
don't remember, it's been ages since I used mh.

It already can.
(setq gnus-summary-gather-subject-limit 'fuzzy) and similar things can
be pretty handy.
