I don't think so.

I've created a testuser, with no .emacs, no .gnus.  I've started Gnu Emacs,
Gnus 5.8.2, and opened the message...  with the same results.

And now listen:  I've repeated the very same procedure on a i586 Linux
machine, and Emacs did a segfault!

I'm not sure anymore if that is a Gnus-bug.
