Yes, it's a server bug and it's fixed in Courier-IMAP version 1.4.3
and later. I'll see if I can get the server in question upgraded.

Which seems to be only an unfortunate effect of the patch in
<iluzny8zhbc.fsf@latte.josefsson.org> . Both server side and client
side splitting works fine with Courier-IMAP version 1.4.3 as long as
this patch isn't installed.
