I'm bitten by this, by the way -- since I don't want to store my password in ~/.{authinfo,authinfo.gpg,netrc}, even if encrypted, auth-source tries to guess my IMAP username. Would it make sense if I could just store the "host", "port" and "user" parameters in ~/.{authinfo,authinfo.gpg,netrc} and then Gnus would prompt me/try to guess the missing parameters?
