Well, aren't the articles marked as read by the client that moved them? Are they marked as unread in other imap clients? Gnus doesn't display old articles at all, by default. And agreed, this is unlike other mail/news readers. You can use C-u SPC to view all articles in a group. > those clients have no notion of a tick mark. The tick mark is part of the IMAP protocol (it's called "flagged" though) so if other clients doesn't support it, it's probably a missing feature in those clients.
