Possibly.  Did you try my patch in
<iluheu5adba.fsf@barbar.josefsson.org>?  I think it keeps `score' out
of .mrk.

As a long term goal, yes.  Using Gnus with nnml or IMAP without
.newsrc.eld would be nice, but backwards compatibility is probably
nicer so I don't expect it will be possibly soon.
